Sydney Temperature
This is a graph of climate data provided by the Bureau of Meteorology for Sydney’s Observatory hill weather station from 1859 up until the present.
There’s some interesting trends here. The monthly means fluctuate so much it’s difficult to see a pattern. But when you start to look at the longer term averages, 1 year, 5 years, 10 years and more there is a clear warming trend, but there’s also a lot of fluctuations, sometimes over periods as long as 10 years.
The chart is interactive, so have a play by selecting the data sets you want to see.
The BOM data goes up to May 2025, I’ll update this as more data becomes available
The Data
The data that was used to create these graphs actually comes from 2 separate weather stations. Data from 1859 until the end of 2017 comes from station 66062 which operated on Observatory Hill from January 1859 until August 31st 2020 when it was decommissioned to make way for renovations of the nearby Fort St Public School. The data from 2018 onwards comes from station 66214 which is located about 150m north of the old station and still within the Observatory Hill compound. The monthly average maximum and minimum temperatures are unmodified monthly means from the BOM’s data. The other longer term averages are moving averages calculated by me, rounded to 2 decimal places.
