Sydney rainfall
More long term weather data from the BOM. Rainfall doesn’t seem to have a long term trend like temperature and sea level. Although in the medium term it matches temperature and sea level with the El Niño - La Niña cycle.
Rainfall data is taken from the same 2 Observatory Hill weather stations as temperature and covers from Jan 1858 to May 2025
The chart is interactive, so have a play by selecting the data sets you want to see.
The Data
The data that was used to create these graphs actually comes from 2 separate weather stations. Data from 1858 until the end of 2017 comes from station 66062 which operated on Observatory Hill from July 1858 until August 31st 2020 when it was decommissioned to make way for renovations of the nearby Fort St Public School. The data from 2018 onwards comes from station 66214 which is located about 150m north of the old station and still within the Observatory Hill compound. The monthly average rainfall is unmodified from the BOM’s data. The other longer term averages are moving averages calculated by me, rounded to 2 decimal places.
